Welcome to Herne Bay Junior School

We are a large junior school serving the centre of Herne Bay. Our website aims to give you a taster of the school, as well as providing regular updated information for both parents and pupils.

We hope that you enjoy your visit to our website, and that you find any information you are looking for. Please feel free to contact the school direct with any queries you may have.

Thank you for visiting!

Morning Sports Club

Morning Sports Club is held for Years 3 to 6 Everyday. Pupils arrive at 8.20am via reception, children will not be aloud in after 8.30am. They will take part in different sports such as Football, Basketball, Soft Ball, and Cricket in the Summer months.

Cake Sale

The School Council organised a very successful Cake Sale raising £238.

Thank you to all the families who baked and donated cakes, and to all the eager cake eaters after school!

Earlier in the year, when the School Council met, they decided they wanted to invite an influential and motivational person into school.  Knowing that school budgets are being squeezed they set about organising the Cake Sale to raise funds.  Watch this space to see who is invited into school!

Skype the Speaker

On Monday 5th February the School Council and a group of Year 6 children spoke directly to the Speaker of the House of Commons, Mr John Bercow.  Using a Skype video link in the library, individual children were able to ask Mr Speaker questions that the children from the whole school had written. The children found out about his childhood before pressing on to more demanding topics, addressing the state of NHS funding and Brexit.  Mr Bercow's responses were informative but highlighted his role as Speaker, as being neutral.  The children were interested in finding out more about the life of MPs, particularly following their visit to Parliament earlier in the year.  Even after 45minutes of questioning there were plenty more on the list, sadly Mr Speaker couldn't give us any more time, but the School Council are enthusiastic about writing to him directly in Parliament with the remaining questions.  they've seen the House of Commons' pigeon hole postal system in person, and now want to use it!

Lunch with Mrs Kingman

The school council were recently invited to have lunch with Mrs Kingman.  They were eager to use the time wisely and prepared for the lunch by choosing some important points to raise. Firstly they had received a request from a Logan in Y6 that tomato ketchup should be available at lunch times.  In preparation for the meeting with Mrs Kingman they wrote letters expressing their proposal.  The quality of writing by Rosie Redford (3HH) was recognised.  Rosie raised some good arguments for why having ketchup would be beneficial for the school.  Mrs Kingman informed the School Council that she would have to speak to the kitchen staff and to Mrs Hall before making a decision.  In assembly on Friday 26th January Mrs Kingman explained this all to the whole school.  As promised, I would like to share with you the outcome of the School Council’s proposal put to me last week when I had lunch with them. They had asked that I consider the possibility for them to have ketchup served with lunches that include chips or potato wedges. The children put forward a clear and convincing case and I am pleased to say that I have agreed with this request. Pupil voice is important within a large school, recognising the British Values that we uphold. The School Council represented their peers effectively in putting forward their case. I am looking forward to future proposals and opportunities for them to make a difference. The whole school erupted into cheers when they were informed during assembly the following week.   The School Council really demonstrated their power in making positive changes within their community and are motivated to continue.

Well done Herne Bay Junior's School Council!!!!
