The universal language of music allows all pupils at Herne Bay Junior School the opportunity to express themselves creatively. Whether through their voices or a range of musical instruments, our pupils experience a knowledge-rich musical curriculum that builds progressively, revisiting and reviewing material to ensure the long-term retention of key knowledge and core skills.
At Herne Bay Junior School, we use Kapow Primary to deliver an engaging curriculum that provides full coverage of the national curriculum objectives. Pupils listen to, compose and perform music across a range of genres and traditions, learning about the inter-related dimensions of music: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, texture, structure and timbre.
Singing plays an important role in this. It is a wonderful community activity that brings our school together. Termly singing assemblies celebrate the songs each year group has learnt during the term. Pupils perform to their peers and their parents both in school and in local community centres, benefitting from the confidence that develops from regular performances. Working alongside Kent Music, all pupils receive whole class instruction – led by an expert music teacher – to learn the ukulele. It is an inspiring experience that encourages pupils to take up an instrument through individual or paired lessons with our peripatetic teachers.
