Physical Education (PE) is a critical part of a child’s development and does more than just promote physical activity—it helps children build life skills that extend far beyond the playground. It not only improves physical health by developing motor skills and fitness but also plays a key role in boosting self-esteem, teamwork, and social skills. At this stage in their development, children are learning to navigate challenges and build resilience, both physically and mentally. Through the Sports Premium funding that we receive, we are committed to enhancing our PE provision, ensuring every child has access to high-quality physical activity opportunities that support their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
At Herne Bay Junior School, PE isn’t just about keeping fit; it’s about nurturing a balanced, confident individual who is prepared for the demands of both school and life. PE is designed to be inclusive, ensuring that all students, whether they excel in sports or need extra support, feel valued. Adapted activities can be tailored to suit individual needs, allowing children with physical disabilities or coordination challenges to participate fully.
All teachers use Primary PE Planning, an online resource, to support their PE teaching. This ensures consistency and progression throughout the years- from Year 3 where the children will start by building the basics of coordination, balance and movement to Year 6 where they will master complex movements and develop leadership skills.
Being part of The Herne Bay and East Kent Coastal School Sports Partnership means we regularly take part in competitions against schools from across the area. Our daily afterschool clubs correspond with the competitions taking place ensuring that all children are prepared, and our teams are often successful- such as our girls football team who have consistently won the league over the years.
At our school, we believe that a strong body supports a strong mind, and that’s why PE plays such a central role in shaping well-rounded, thriving individuals. We ensure that every child, regardless of ability, feels valued and included, creating a space where everyone can participate and grow.
If you have any further questions about our PE curriculum please contact the school office.
