Modern Foreign Languages: Spanish

At Herne Bay Junior School, we believe that learning Spanish opens a window to a rich tapestry of culture, communication, and creativity. Our Spanish curriculum is designed to captivate young learners, igniting their curiosity and fostering an appreciation for the Spanish-speaking world. By engaging our pupils in vibrant cultural experiences and celebrations, we aim to create a classroom atmosphere that encourages inclusion and enthusiasm.

In a world increasingly connected through diverse cultures, our approach offers a knowledge-rich experience designed to develop a love for learning a language. Through carefully sequenced units of work, we ensure that pupils progressively build on their language skills, developing proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Our comprehensive curriculum covers the national curriculum objectives and includes key content such as vocabulary development, grammar fundamentals and pronunciation.

To reinforce learning, we incorporate retrieval practices that encourage regular review of previously taught material, fostering retention and development of the language. Our lessons are structured to support progression, ensuring that each year builds upon the last, allowing students to develop fluency and confidence in their Spanish abilities. These skills are applied in a range of scenarios, topics and celebrations.

We celebrate rich Spanish traditions by exploring Spanish festivals such as Día de los Muertos, Semana Santa and Día de los Reyes, alongside the National Day of Spain, which promotes an understanding and appreciation of Spain’s rich cultural heritage.

Additionally, we encourage pupils to explore the diverse and delectable world of Spanish cuisine, with themed lunch menus that allow them to try popular dishes such as paella and churros, thereby enhancing their grasp of vocabulary and conversation related to food and dining.

Our goal at Herne Bay Juniors is to create a dynamic learning environment that inspires confidence in using the Spanish language and furthers a lifelong appreciation of cultural diversity. In doing so, we prepare our students not only for academic success but also for global citizenship.
