At Herne Bay Junior School, we believe Geography is the key to understanding the world around us and our place within it. Our Geography curriculum ignites curiosity and passion for the planet, fostering a sense of responsibility for global citizenship. Through an engaging and knowledge-rich programme, pupils explore diverse landscapes, cultures, and environments, providing them with the skills and knowledge to make informed decisions about the world they live in.
We ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum objectives, which builds progressively across year groups, promoting retrieval and retention of key concepts. In Year 3, pupils embark on an exciting journey, exploring natural disasters and the Earth’s physical features. Year 4 pupils explore how rivers and mountains shape our world, studying the water cycle and landforms. Year 5 takes them further into global geography to look at how farming shapes and is shaped by the land, understanding human and physical geography, sustainability, and agriculture. Year 6 concludes with an exploration of extreme environments turning their focus to the poles of our planet. Pupils examine the polar regions, indigenous groups and the impact of climate change.
Inclusion is at the heart of our approach. Every pupil, regardless of background or ability, is provided with opportunities to succeed and excel. We celebrate our pupils’ learning through field trips, guest speakers such as the Green Schools Project and interactive experiences such as the visit from Mr Egypt and participation in the Solar for Schools. These experiences enrich their understanding and bring the subject to life beyond the classroom.
Our approach to Geography encourages not only academic success but also instils a sense of wonder and responsibility for the world around us, preparing pupils to be knowledgeable, compassionate, and engaged global citizens.
