Tennis Development Festival

On Wednesday afternoon some children from Years 3 and 4 went to Herne Bay HIgh School for some tennis coaching. Several tennis stations were set up and the children learnt different tennis skills at each one.  The children had great fun, who knows maybe we have a future Andy Murray amongst us!

Harry Potter World and the British Library

What an amazing trip!

On Wednesday morning, at 10:30, fourteen very excited children loaded their bags onto our smart new mini-bus and headed off from school, London bound. They were not the only excited people; Mr Hobbs, Mrs Charter and Miss Black were also looking forward to the next 48 hours.

The drive to London was straight forward, despite the Blackwall tunnel being closed, and we arrived in perfect time to park and walk to St Pancras station where we had our picnic lunch. Once full of tea and sandwiches, we headed off to Platform 9 and ¾ at King's Cross. We 'persuaded' the officials to allow us to all pose for a photograph before enjoying a little gift shopping.

Appointment of Headteacher

I am delighted to inform you that the governing body has appointed Melody Kingman as Headteacher at Herne Bay Junior School.  As you will know, Mrs Kingman has been Acting Headteacher since September 2017, when Mrs Nation left the school, and has previously served as Deputy Headteacher for five years.  She will take up her new appointment from the beginning of Term 4.

The governors were looking for a remarkable Headteacher who has the passion and commitment to lead Herne Bay Juniors in its mission to provide an outstanding education for all its pupils.  Much has been achieved in the last three years and the school is now ranked as 7th in the county in the Kent Real School’s Guide.  After a rigorous recruitment and selection process, extending over two days, the governors have confidence that Mrs Kingman has the qualities needed to embed and build on this success.

I would like to thank the many staff and children who were involved in the selection process.  The children were, as always, a credit to the school and to you.

I know you will join me in congratulating Mrs Kingman and continue to give her your upmost support in the future.

Film Week

Film Week came again to HBJS! This year we spent the week exploring the Pixar film Inside Out which ignited the imagination of the teachers and children through looking at the wonderful world inside our heads. It kicked off with our first every film night, which was a huge success (especially due to the sweets and hot dogs!). The children then spent the week immersed in all things film and explored the themes of emotions, growing up, dreams and memories across all curriculum areas. It was amazing to see the children learning to understand different feelings and those of others and start to communicate more freely to their peers and adults around them. Across the school, learning took many forms ranging from producing performance poetry to persuasive letters encouraging lost emotions to return. Design projects built momentum as memory boxes, memory orbs and dream catchers filled the classrooms. To round off a fantastic week, the whole school cam together to celebrate each year group's creations and kick of children's mental health awareness which took place the following week.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the annual PTA Coin Collection. Our wonderful PTA have been busy counting the coins and I am pleased to announce that the winning classes are 5JW, 5HO and 4PP. They will be enjoying a trip to the cinema on Monday afternoon! £1153 was raised throughout the week. Well done everyone!
