“Mathematics is the music of reason.”
– James Joseph Sylvester.
The study of mathematics equips students with critical problem-solving skills essential for navigating the complexities of the modern world. At Herne Bay Junior School, we are committed to delivering a Maths curriculum that is rich in knowledge and sequenced in manageable steps. This approach significantly reduces cognitive load for our students and ensures that new learning is retained over time. We follow the White Rose scheme of learning, which supports our structured sequencing, alongside research on effective teaching methods from authoritative sources, such as the National Centre for Teaching Mathematics (NCTEM).
Our curriculum is thoughtfully designed to facilitate the review of concepts and knowledge through daily early morning work and in lesson starters, ensuring that core ideas are revisited and reinforced. Each unit is organised to delve deeply into topics, enabling our pupils to develop a comprehensive understanding. Additionally, we employ varied representations in lessons where appropriate to provide children with the opportunity for extended practice of key facts and essential skills.
To enhance their learning experience, children participate in the Times Tables Rockstars times tables programme, both at home and within the classroom, allowing them to hone their multiplication skills effectively. The Times Tables Fluency programme is seamlessly integrated into our daily teaching, further solidifying these vital mathematical foundations.
Our commitment to fostering a strong mathematical start in Year 3 is reflected in the implementation of the Numbersense programme, which ensures that additive facts are learned and practised, thereby supporting students as they progress through Key Stage 2. By closely working with local feeder schools, this ensures a smooth and purposeful development of key facts as children progress from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2.
Furthermore, we strive to make authentic connections between Maths and other subjects, such as interpreting data in Science. Our themed days, including Times Tables Rockstars Day, are designed to promote engagement and joy in mathematics, making it an enjoyable and enriching experience for all learners.
