Geography

At HBJS, we believe that Geography plays an integral role in our children’s learning and understanding of the world. We learn about Geography in many diverse ways; through outdoor learning, discussion, map work and increasingly through the use of ICT. We believe that a broad and varied approach to learning, accompanied by a wider curriculum, enables the children to understand both their local area and world around them.  We believe that a high-quality Geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
We strive to ensure that our teaching of Geography equips the children with knowledge and understanding about diverse places, people, resources and natural environments. We encourage the children to become both curious and observant of the natural world and to recognise the changing and contrasting seasons we experience.  We discuss the many similarities and differences between Herne Bay and other coastal towns, both in the UK and worldwide, which include land use, settlement, habitat and people. Within our topic approach, children are able to make links between Geography and other areas of the curriculum.

Please take a look at our Geography Progression of Knowledge and Skills document which shows the areas of learning for each year group.

We truly believe that Geography can foster a greater sense of responsibility in our children about the environment we enjoy and by learning how we can all contribute to a better future for everyone is a key part of our vision for the Geography curriculum at HBJS. We encourage all of our children to observe and explore the outside world and recognise the identified link between spending time in nature and the positive impact this has on our mental health.
