Holidays during term time

Herne Bay Junior School's policy is not to authorise holidays during term time and this expectation is outlined in the School's Attendance Policy. This is also in line with the Government's amendments to the 2006 regulations in the Education (Pupil Registration) (England) (Amendment) Regulation 2013, which states that holidays during term time can no longer be authorised unless there are "exceptional circumstances".

For your information, "exceptional circumstances" tends to apply to parents who work in the services such as the Armed Forces etc. who are unable to take leave during set periods of the calendar year.

Please be advised that the school will continue to refuse authorisation of holiday or other requests for leave during term time, unless "exceptional circumstances" as per the regulations apply.

If you wish to apply for leave then please write to me at the school giving at least two weeks' notice, as per current School Policy, outlining the reasons for your request, the number of days and the "exceptional circumstances" for consideration. Please be advised that if requests are declined and the leave is taken then the penalty notice could be issued as per the regulations.

Please remember that attendance at school has a direct impact on student achievement and progress. To be an outstanding school, attendance is expected to be above 96/97% (less than 5 days absence per child per year).

Learning begins the moment children enter Herne Bay Junior School. Therefore, it is essential that children attend school on time. Late arrival can set your child up for a difficult start tot their day. The information below shows the impact of being late or absent. It adds up to an alarming figure.
