History

At Herne Bay Junior School, we believe that the teaching of History equips our children with a knowledge and understanding that enables them to make connections, comparisons and form their own judgements on significant events from the past.

The teaching of History through an enquiry based approach develops meaningful thinkers whilst promoting curious learners who are actively engaged in the History curriculum. Children have a chance to learn through studying a ‘Key Question’ which enables them to delve deeper within a historical period of time.

We strive to ensure that children are taught skills which they can continue to develop throughout their journey through the school. In doing so, we aspire for the children to apply their historical skills in order to understand how people’s lives have been shaped by key events and people from our past. As children progress through the school, they will also experience and study key periods from our past; including Mayans, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient China, Ancient Rome, Vikings, Anglo-Saxons and the Victorians.

Children are provided with opportunities to investigate and hold real artefacts, take part in experience days and travel to historical monuments locally and also outside of the county they live within.

Through building links in the local community, children at HBJS play an integral part in the development in history within their local area, Herne Bay. By working closely with the local Memorial Park to support in celebrating the 100 year anniversary of WW1, to visiting the local Seaside Museum, our children are continually immersed in History through the great opportunities and teaching being provided to them as young learners at HBJS.
